BAYLOR BULLETS

Subject: Deans Pressure Faculty Senate
“I deeply appreciate your most tangible support during these very difficult time. Three deans have involved themselves in ways that bring undue pressure on these senators…. It seems (to me) highly unethical for administrators to seek to influence fair debate and discussion by instilling fear of retaliation.”

Subject: New BU Professors
“I am told Baylor has recently hired, in addition to Dembski, at least five professors who have creationist/Intelligent Design views: two in physics, one in mechanical engineering, one at Truett and Beckwith. Several personal websites give evidence that the claim is accurate. Note that Keith Hartberg, biology, and Jim Patton, psychology, leaders of faculty opposition to the Polanyi Center, have been notified that their contracts as department chairs will not be renewed. There are also reports from faculty that science departments are having great difficulty filling vacancies because of the narrowness of the theological position insisted upon by the administration in hiring process. All! the while we are building a $105m science building and seeking to move to a top-ranked U.S. research university.”

Subject: Raising Money for Ads [in opposition to Sloan initiatives]
“…..our group is raising money for ads…Would any of you (re: Dawson/Cheavens Clans) like to be an official part of it? We have a small executive council of trusted insiders….quote of the day: ‘ He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetuate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.’ MLK’s Stride Toward Freedom”

“Support for the Senators is very
important. The man to replace Henry
Walbesser is David Strugill. He was
denied tenure two years ago because the provost had no clue what ‘publications’
and cutting edge research were in David’s field. The dean went to bat for him and the tenure decision was
reversed....he received the 2nd highest number of votes to be on Senate…. So he
is a good legitimate replacement.
Something that has probably just
dawned on many folks and just dawned on me is that this swing to the
fundamentalists may be occasioned as much by money pressure as conformity of
ideology. I believe Robert (Sloan) and
his minions are theological fundamentalist and are becoming political
fundamentalists. That whatever their
personal, deepest convictions are, they may see people…[implied fundamental
financiers/SBC] as gateways to untapped money…”
